Signs of rats or mice
- Droppings in the pantry, under sinks, in the garage or in the attic
- Scratching or scurrying sounds in the walls or attic, especially at night
- Gnaw marks on food packaging, wood, wiring or pipes
- Greasy rub marks along baseboards and walls
- Shredded paper, fabric or insulation used for nests
Why act quickly
Rats and mice multiply fast. A female house mouse can produce six to ten litters a year, and her young are able to mate two months after birth. A small problem does not stay small.
Rodents eat and contaminate food, and rats can chew through many building materials. The two rats that cause most problems are the Norway rat and the roof rat; roof rats are climbers and are usually the ones heard in attics.

Common questions
How do rats and mice get in?
Through small gaps. A mouse can squeeze through an opening about the size of a dime and a rat through one about the size of a quarter. Common entry points are gaps around pipes and utility lines, garage doors, roof vents and damaged soffits.
Is it rats or mice?
Droppings are the easiest clue. Mouse droppings are about the size of a grain of rice; rat droppings are noticeably larger, around half an inch long.
